Meet Our Members: Lynne Chapman
Lynne Chapman was born in London but has been based in Sheffield for 30 years and works from her attic studio in Nether Edge. Lynne has been a freelance artist all her working life; her career has, at various times, taken in editorial and children's book illustration, reportage-sketching and fine art textiles. She has been a member of Sheffield Creative Guild for just under a year. Below, Lynne shares with us how her practice has been developing since we entered the UK's lockdown in March.
“My normal practice is freelance reportage-sketching (my paid living) alongside fine-art textiles (my passion). During the lock-down, I have been determined to carry on working but something about the strangeness of this period and the changes to our everyday lives made me feel the need to also change my work practice for the duration.
So, I have been painting in acrylics. This is entirely new to me and so quite an endeavour; but I am making things worse for myself because I am also, at last, properly grappling with my urge to create abstract pieces. This is something I have managed in my recent textile work but whenever I have attempted it with drawing, I have always found it such a great struggle that I don’t last long. So I am using this enforced period to get myself together and have been struggling, pretty much daily, with abstract painting. Much of what I create gets painted over the next day, but I am now starting to achieve results which I am happy with.”
