What Next? First meeting of 2021
Sheffield Creative Guild is proud to re-launch the Sheffield chapter of What Next?
What Next? is a national movement bringing together arts and cultural organisations from across the UK, to articulate, champion and strengthen the role of culture in our society. The Sheffield chapter is an opportunity to add your voice to the local and national conversation and debate. You can read more about the project on the What Next? website.
Each What Next? chapter feeds into the national work of the movement through a series of local meetings at which members of the creative industries (and anyone with an interest in and passion for the arts) can come together to share, debate and take collective action on issues facing the local and national cultural sector.
Our first meeting of 2021 will take place via zoom on 12 May and is free for anybody to attend. We will be using the meeting to discuss the issues affecting Sheffield's creative sector and to decide on the topics for the meetings to come over the next year. To inform these discussions, we'll be hearing from:
Rebecca Maddox, Sheffield City Council's Head of Business Development (Culture), and other Culture Consortium members about what they've been working on recently and what Sheffield's creative scene is looking like as we tentatively move towards an easing of the lockdown.
Sarah Price , a researcher in the Sheffield Performer and Audience Research Centre (SPARC) at The University of Sheffield, specialising in understanding how audiences engage with arts and culture.
Sarah will speak about the UKRI project, an Arts and Humanities Research Council funded project investigating the impact of Covid-19 on arts and culture in South Yorkshire. This project is responding to and modelling the impact of COVID-19 for Sheffield's cultural ecology.
The running order for the event will be:
17:30 - Intro from the Guild team and from Lora Krasteva, a member of the What Next? steering group
17:35 - Culture Consortium update from Rebecca Maddox
17:45 - UKRI information from Sarah Price
18:00 - Group discussions
18:30 - Break
18:35 - Feedback and setting of discussion points for upcoming meetings
As well as the cultural sector, as a movement What Next? initiates conversations and unlikely alliances with community leaders, politicians, funders, academics and businesses and uses the findings of those conversations to lobby government and create real change. This is your chance to be a part of that conversation and to improve the cultural sector in both Sheffield and the UK.
