History combines multiple viewpoints and experiences, but it’s often dominated by one perspective, leaving the others unrecorded and important stories untold. We recognise that Sheffield’s museums often don’t represent these different perspectives and experiences and we want to change that.
As part of our commitment to be an actively fully inclusive and anti-racist organisation, Sheffield Museums Trust is looking to commission a new series of tours across our sites – Abbeydale Industrial Hamlet, Graves Gallery, Kelham Island Museum, Millennium Gallery, Shepherd Wheel and Weston Park Museum. The series of new guided tours will share and amplify the different voices in Sheffield.
We would like our visitors (and people who don’t currently visit) to feel an ownership of, and connection to, their museum collections. Many diverse communities have contributed to our collective story, and we need to interpret the collections in a way that better reflects this, through inclusive, inspiring and engaging events and activities.
We want to hear from people from cultural communities and diverse backgrounds who can create a tour that offers a new perspective on the collections. Your tour might look at an object or a series of objects that resonate with you and your lived experience. Alternatively, it might take people on a route through a museum that highlights an alternative narrative or provides deeper interpretation or a different context.
Could you write a new tour for one of our museums or galleries? Would you like to share your perspective on the objects and artworks on display? The tour could be at any one of our six sites. It could cover the whole site or focus on one gallery or just part of the collection. Each tour should last around 45 minutes to an hour and be able to be delivered to up to 20 visitors at a time.
Our team will be on hand to answer any questions you might have as you develop your tour, research the objects or artworks you’ll include, and write the tour script.
What we are looking for:
• A researched tour script that can be delivered by our team going forward
• Background information that will help answer further visitor questions
• For you to lead the tour at least once for our staff and visitors
• For you to run a guidance session with our team to give further context and background to the tour
Budget and time frame
The fee available per tour is £1,500 – we are looking for up to three tours from different people or groups. The work will be expected to take place in October to December 2021, with a view to introducing the new tours in 2022.
Expressions of Interest
Please submit an expression of interest by noon on Monday 4th October to [email protected], including information on your proposed theme for the tour, why you have chosen that theme, and details of any relevant experience you want to mention.
This can be submitted in written format (no more than two sides of A4) or as a video (no more than five minutes long). You can include text and/or images. We are here to support you through this process, and we will make reasonable adjustments to give you the best opportunity to demonstrate your skills.
Our team are available to have informal conversations and to answer questions about the project on Friday 17th September and Monday 27th September over Zoom. If this is something you’d be interested in, please get in touch to arrange a time.
