Formed in 2007 by Helen Cowen and Tracey Shibli, Sheffield Young Singers is the umbrella name for 3 choirs: Sheffield Junior Singers (for children age 7-11), Sheffield Young Singers (for young people age 11-18) and Sheffield Singers (an adult community choir).
All 3 groups sing a far ranging repertoire from Lebanese folk songs and Zulu greeting songs to Mozart and Caccini taking in musical theatre, rock anthems, folk and film music on the way. With regular performances in Sheffield at venues such as The Crucible Studio, City Hall, the Library and Merlin Theatres, we also travel further afield to sing at festivals and venues including Voices Now! at London’s Roundhouse and Midlands Arts Centre. We also collaborate with a range of partners including Music in the Round, Abbeydale Singers, Sheffield Music Hub and Sheffield Music Academy.
Under Helen Cowen’s direction our youth section in particular has established a reputation as a high quality, dynamic and adventurous choir with a refined sound.
Our groups meet weekly in term time at The Ashgate Room, Beacon Methodist Church, Broomhill, Ashgate Road, Sheffield S10.
