Joanna Whittle

Fine Artist (Painter)

I am a landscape painter based in Sheffield, working from KIAC studios. I make miniature, detailed oil paintings exploring traditional themes such as islands and ruins. I have recently started working with ceramics, exploring traditional decorative practices as well as extending themes developed in the paintings.

I studied painting at Central st Martins College and the Royal College of Art and have worked as a fine artist since graduation from the latter in 2000. I have shown nationally and internationally in both solo and group exhibitions including Exit Art (New York); Agnews, Clapham Art Gallery, Kieth Talent Gallery and Collyer Bristow Gallery (London); Jerwood Dance House and  the Jugg Art Foundation (Suffolk);  Exchange (Berlin) and Cupola (Sheffield).I have undertaken a number of public commissions, most recently for Sheffield Industrial Museums Trust and CITU on Kelham Island producing a mural and ceramic installation. I was selected for the John Moores Painting Prize exhibition this year (2018), showing at the walker Art Gallery (Liverpool). I was part of the Making Ways funded project 'Confluence' - showing with a group of other Sheffield artists at the Herrick Gallery in London. At the end of 2018 I had work included in 'Confluence' at Bloc and in 'Bethlehem Boys Club'  at Sidney+Matilda Gallery.

This year I have curated an exhibition 'Flat+Earth' at Sidney+Matilda gallery including the work of national and Sheffield artists.

I have also been the joint winner of the Harley Open Prize
