Lynne Barker

Visual Artist

My current practice draws attention to the uncared for, overlooked and the forgotten to highlight gaps and slippages in prevailing histories. Objects found through chance encounters are catalysts for my research process. Methods including close observation, mapping and photography are used to gather data and artefacts to create archives. These records inspire multidisciplinary outputs taking forms including drawing, sculpture, film and artists' books  I began my current project Crossing in 2019 which began with the discovery of a collection of national costume dolls. This has triggered a chain of research, which has taken me to Switzerland, Hamburg and New York, reflecting on cultural identity, migration and othering.

I am a recipient of: the University of Huddersfield Vice Chancellors Award for Outstanding Achievement and the Sheffield Benefactors Endowment Trust Fund Travel Bursary 2019 & 2020. I won the Quilt Creations Category at the Festival of Quilts in 2019 with Chest.  I have undertaken residencies at the Civic Barnsley 2018/19 and at the Tool for Change Makers Conference in Caux, Switzerland in 2019. I have exhibited in the UK and Switzerland and have recently completed my MFA in Fine Art at Sheffield Hallam University.
