Deborah Smith

Literary Translator & Publisher

I translate Korean literature into English, including Han Kang's The Vegetarian, for which I won the 2016 Man Booker International Prize. I was also awarded an Arts Foundation Fellowship for my work as a literary translator on and off the page: I teach short-course workshops in literary translation; give talks at universities such as Princeton and Oxford, and literary festivals such as Jaipur and Edinburgh; and write on literary translation for the Guardian and the Financial Times. In 2015 I founded Tilted Axis, a nonprofit press publishing cult, contemporary Asian writing. I was born & grew up in Doncaster, studied at Cambridge and SOAS, and moved to Sheffield in 2016 after finishing a PhD.
