Ellen Sargen

Contemporary composer and flautist

Ellen is a research-led contemporary composer and flautist exploring composer-performer relationships in her creative practice. Currently writing and playing as a freelance musician, Ellen will commence study for a doctorate in September 2019 having just completed her Masters at the University of Sheffield with a distinction. Working with ensembles including the Ligeti Quartet, Ensemble 360, NotaBene; and soloists including Sarah Watts, Shu Jiang and Chris Pidcock, Ellen has worked and been premiered nationally and internationally. She has previously been commissioned by Classical Sheffield and Music in the Round, and has won various awards for her work, including Phillip John Lord Composition Prize, Gibbons Prize and third place in the International Josef Dorfman Composition Competition. Selected for masterclasses at Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival, Darmstadt International Music Festival and with Psappha’s Composing For Scheme, Ellen also received funding to attend the International Summer Academy of Music.

A passionate musician in both education and community settings, Ellen has worked with early years through to undergraduates in many different capacities, including as a flautist, workshop leader and composition teacher. For two years Ellen chaired the University’s student music outreach body ‘Music in the City’, through this familiarising herself with Sheffield’s music network. Ellen has continued to promote and make music within this network through her creative, academic and community driven roles, and seeks to keep expanding this role alongside, and as a part of, her future career.

As a flautist Ellen has expansive experience as a soloist, and plays the piccolo, the alto and the bass flutes. Please see CV for further information, and email ellensargen@gmail.com for flute lesson enquiries.
