Polly Ives

Musician/animateur/presenter/teacher

Polly enjoys a varied career as a workshop leader, trainer, concert presenter and narrator, teacher and cellist, with a particular specialism in music for children under eight years old.

    As a children’s concert presenter, Polly regularly performs children’s concerts with Sheffield-based Music in the Round to around 18,000 children every year. She also regularly works with the London Philharmonic Orchestra, presenting their schools’ and family concerts and MINIharmonics workshops for Under 5s at the Royal Festival Hall, Southbank Centre. She has also worked with CBeebies, Royal Opera House, Southbank Sinfonia, European Brandenburg Ensemble and the Beatrix Potter Attraction and has performed live on BBC Radio 3’s In Tune.

    Polly is founder and director of Concerteenies, a live music series for babies, toddlers and their grown-ups in Sheffield and Derbyshire. With ongoing series at Greystones Backroom, Yellow Arch Studio, Crucible Theatre and in Castleton, in 2018 there will also be pop-up performances in unusual places and new partnerships with other arts organisations and artists.

   Polly is a highly experienced workshop leader for early years children including the Youth Music funded projects Music Box (2004 – 2007) and Soundplay (2013-2015) with Music in the Round; both with a focus on music supporting speech and language for children at elevated risk of delay. She was also a workshop leader with Wigmore Hall’s Chamber Tots projects with children aged 4-5 in schools in Paddington and Hackney in London between 2012 and 2014. Polly is currently leading a series of Musical Stories workshops for 3-5 year olds as part of Hull’s City of Culture 2017.

 

Polly has devised, managed and delivered training days, inset sessions and conferences for early years practitioners, musicians, workshop leaders and students, including for MitR, LPO, Sing Up!, Sheffield Hallam University, Sheffield University and for music Hubs across the country. Polly has devised, presented and written many online resources for early years practitioners and KS1 teachers to support their delivery to young children including many Youtube videos.

 

As a teacher, she has taught the cello and piano for many years and has coached with Sheffield Music Hub, Sheffield Music School, City of Sheffield Youth Orchestra and the National Children’s Orchestra of Great Britain. She has adjudicated at music festivals and is Chair of Sheffield Young Singers.

 

As a cellist, Polly performs with Simply Strings Trio, Escafeld String Quartet, Guild of Strings, ELO Experience and singer/ songwriter Julian Jones. She has also performed on the BBC's TV special of Billionaire Boy by David Walliams alongside Bryn Terfel. She has performed with the English Philharmonic Orchestra, Sheffield Pops Orchestra, South Yorkshire Symphony Orchestra and alongside Richard Hawley, Vanessa Mae and Anne Garner.
