I am a contemporary artist based in Sheffield. My work all develops from a painting background, particularly oil on canvas. I work thematically, set free by the legacy of great twentieth century painters. I believe painting to be a silent medium with huge evocative power and aspire to create paintings that have depth, vitality and authenticity. Much of my work is a response to being outside in nature and its myriad infinite information and effects; one strategy is to focus on the very near, such as moss, an ice crystal, lamb’s wool on wire and hold this in focus within an array of marks and layers of tone that at best both suggest and embody responses to memory and sensation. I also work with the figure in the classical sense, or the basic formula of the figure on the ground, again as a central focus, also as a protagonist. I am very inspired by process, particularly drawing and accumulating data or visual records especially on phone.
