Catherine Mailhac

Independent Consultant - Engagement, Interpretation and Evaluation

I help people connect to the world around them through creative events, learning projects and exhibition interpretation. I do research and evaluation to support work in these areas. I also create, deliver and manage events, projects and partnerships. I get a real buzz from teaming up with artists and creative people to explore fresh perspectives and imaginative approaches. Find out what people think of my work on my website here...

Some of my favourite projects include...

  • Writing an advocacy report for The Poetry Society’s SLAMbassadors UK project which engages young people with spoken word artists,
  • Co-ordinating collaborative marketing activities and evaluating the Going Public project, a partnership between major European art collectors, Museums Sheffield, Sheffield Hallam University, Site Gallery and Sheffield Cathedral,
  • Working with over 20 venues in the Museums of Cheshire partnership to draw out the common threads running through their collections, and recommending creative interpretation, programming and projects to take them forwards,
  • Finding out what visitors and stakeholders really think about the Flying Scotsman Season with an evaluation project at the National Railway Museum in York.
  • Developing, co-ordinating and delivering Drawing the Summera creative season of drawing activities for Museums Sheffield. The project explored drawing in its widest sense, as a useful life skill, a tool for many different professions, and as way to engage with our surroundings.

I have worked in national, regional and independent museums and galleries, historic houses, community and education settings. I have been part of learning, marketing and curatorial teams and am a big advocate of cross-departmental working.

I'm on the Board of Directors for the Sheffield Creative Guild. I’m a Winston Churchill Research Fellow, and an Associate and Mentor at the Museums Association. I have a BA in the History of Art from the University of Cambridge and an MA in Museum Studies from the University of Leicester. I am a member of the Visitor Studies Group, GEM, the Social History Curators Group, Market Research Society and the Yorkshire Fed.
